Over the decades, the United States, Canada and Mexico, bound together by geography and shared democratic values, have built an economic and geopolitical partnership that has propelled their collective prosperity. And yet, despite concessions and promises of retaliatory actions by Canada and Mexico, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced illegal tariffs that will badly damage the most dynamic and integrated region in the world, even if exemptions have been carved out to this point.

But this could also serve as an opportunity for Canada and Mexico to strengthen their co-operation and work together to defend the very idea of North America as a region of shared prosperity.
