As the global demand for sustainable energy solutions intensifies, Mexico finds itself at a crucial juncture in its energy transition journey. Recognized as one of the leading emerging economies, Mexico has the potential to set a precedent in the adoption and promotion of renewable energy sources. The next administration has a unique opportunity to affirm its commitment to this cause by enacting strategic changes to the institutional framework of the electricity sector. Key among these changes are the appointment of non-executive directors to the Board of CENACE, the implementation of an automated one-stop-shop web-based system for renewable energy project permitting, the announcement of new requirements for Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) aligned with updated climate objectives, the resumption of the Energy Transition Council, and conducting long-term power sector auctions. These steps are essential in signaling Mexico’s dedication to achieving a sustainable energy future.
