The rejection of the electricity reform in the Mexican Congress on Easter Sunday was a major defeat for President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and a game-changing win for Mexico’s democracy. To ensure it is not a pyrrhic victory, however, civil society must continue to defend an energy transition, and the fractious Mexican opposition needs to articulate a clear alternative path for the country as the 2024 presidential election moves closer.
